Apple teams with top credit cards for iPhone 6 payments, reports say

Even the Samsung Galaxy S3 allowed for mobile payments -- this one done at a McDonald's in the UK. Rich Trenholm/CNET

It's Labor Day weekend in the US, a time for barbecues, back-to-school shopping -- and iPhone rumors of course.

Recode on Sunday reported that American Express has agreed to "work together" with Apple on its new iPhone payment system, which is widely expected to be introduced with an iPhone 6 at Apple's September 9 event.

Citing unnamed sources familiar with the talks, Recode added that American Express is just one of several partners the iPhone maker needs to sign up before it launches the new mobile payments system. Sources told Recode that Apple has held discussion "with multiple credit card networks" about the new payment system. The Information previously reported that Visa had agreed to work with Apple, Recode noted.

Bloomberg followed with a report, also citing unnamed sources, that Apple is also partnering with Visa and MasterCard on the payment system, which would be enabled on the iPhone 6 by a short-distance wireless technology called near-field communication, or NFC. NFC, along with the Touch ID fingerprint recognition reader found on the most recent iPhone, will enable you to pay for items in a store with the touch of a finger.

Mobile payments, or the notion that you can pay for goods and services at the checkout with your smartphone, are poised to break into the mainstream if Apple and the iPhone 6 get it right.

Related stories iPhone 6 -- the jolt that mobile payments need Apple iPhone 6 event officially set for Sept. 9 iPhone 6: Sorting through fact and fiction around Apple's upcoming smartphone

Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller declined to comment on the reports. We also contacted the credit card companies for confirmation. MasterCard declined to comment. We'll update this report if we hear back from the other two.

Wired was just the latest to report recently that the next iPhone would include mobile-payment capabilities powered by NFC. The technology and capability to pay with a tap of your mobile device has been around for years -- you can tap an NFC-enabled Samsung Galaxy S5 or NFC-enabled credit card at point-of-sale terminals found at many Walgreen drugstores in the US, for example -- but awareness and usage remain low.

Apple's visibility and massive user base - it already holds credit card data for about 800 million iTunes account holders -- could change that.

CNET's Roger Cheng contributed to this report.

These are the 8 Android and Windows Phone features we want on the iPhone 6

The iPhone 5S successor is right around the bend. Sarah Tew/CNET

One could argue that the entire modern smartphone market has been largely built around aping Apple's revolutionary iPhone, which first appeared in 2007. Indeed, that phone still looks remarkably "current" in some ways: the minimalist rectangular design, the no-keyboard glass touchscreen, and tap and swipe interface are all mainstays of the marketplace now.

Apple, of course, is deadly serious when it comes to protecting its intellectual property -- just ask Samsung. But the iPhone maker has borrowed good ideas from competitors, too -- plenty of things in iOS 7 and the forthcoming iOS 8 first appeared in competing Android and Windows Phone models.

In my book, that's a good thing -- consumers are getting better features across the board, regardless of their OS. To that end, I'm hoping that the iPhone 6 has picked up a few of its rivals' other tricks as well.

Virtually guaranteed

We already know we're getting home screen widgets (of a sort) and swappable keyboards, courtesy of iOS 8. Beyond those, rumors of NFC (near-field communication that pairs devices in a tap) and a larger screen make that spec almost a given, not to mention the undeniable industry shift in these directions, supported by consumer demand.

Want, want, wantSmart lock screen tricks: Talk about intuitive. I love the simple way that the LG G2 and LG G3's lock screen turns on and off with a simple, elegant, and totally natural double-tap.

Waterproofing: Rugged water-resistant phones have been around for a long time, but Sony's high-end Xperia line (like the Xperia Z2) and Samsung's Galaxy S5 are making the idea of inherent "waterproofing" less of a luxury and more of a given. If these companies can bolster an everyday handset against ordinary splashes and accidental soakings, Apple can too.

Apple iPhone 6 expected to include mobile payments, NFC

The iPhone's Passbook app was a small step by Apple into the mobile-payments world. James Martin/CNET

There's more evidence Apple is diving into the world of mobile payments with its next iPhone.

Wired, citing people familiar with the matter, reported Thursday that NFC, or near-field communication, is coming to the hotly anticipated iPhone 6 and will power a new mobile-payment platform on the device. NFC allows for touchless, short-distance interaction between a mobile device and other objects, often used to allow payments at a register or a quick way for one phone to recognize another.

Amid the bevy of iPhone rumors coming out in the run-up to the smartphone's expected launch on September 9, the NFC prediction was already hinted at last month by other publications.

If these rumors are true, the change could allow Apple to catch up to its chief rival, Samsung, in offering the technology. A few years ago, Samsung highlighted the absence of NFC in iPhones when trying to pitch its Galaxy smartphones. Many of Samsung's Galaxy phones can share content such as photos or a music playlist by simply bumping the backs of the phones together. NFC can also be used to pair smartphones to other devices, such as cameras and wireless headphones and speakers, simply by placing a phone in close proximity to compatible devices.

Related stories iPhone 6: Sorting through fact and fiction around Apple's upcoming smartphone Apple wearable rumored to debut with iPhone 6 in September Apple sets Sept. 9 for new iPhone debut, report says CNET's iPhone 6 rumor roundup

Wired reports a new mobile-payment platform will be one of the "hallmark features" of the new device.

While Apple doesn't offer much so far in mobile payments, the company did take a small step in that direction with Passbook, a service launched in 2012 that brought together a person's loyalty cards, coupons, and event tickets on the iPhone. Passbook doesn't include debit or credit card payment features.

Among the other rumored upgrades, most industry watchers expect the next iPhone to have two display sizes, a 4.7-inch model and a 5.5-inch model, larger than the latest 4-inch iPhone 5C and 5S phones. That new feature, again, is seen as an attempt to match other smartphone makers such as Samsung, which have been moving into larger displays in their newer models.

Apple iPhone 6 event officially set for Sept. 9

Apple on Thursday sent out invites for a press event on Sept. 9 in its hometown of Cupertino, Calif.

The company provided few hints about what will be announced beyond saying "Wish we could say more." That could indicate something related to Siri, Apple's digital voice assistant. Generally, Apple is expected to introduce its newest iPhone, dubbed the iPhone 6. The company also could show off a wearable at the event.

The event will come a year after Apple introduced the iPhone 5S and 5C and a week after arch rival Samsung is set to unveil its Galaxy Note 4 phone-tablet hybrid, or phablet. Apple has added a new iPhone every year since former CEO Steve Jobs introduced the smartphone line in 2007, and new iPhones have been unveiled in the fall since 2011.

Many market watchers expect Apple to introduce two new iPhone 6 models with display sizes of 4.7 and 5.5 inches, though some recent reports speculate one device could be released at a later date. Analysts expect the iPhone 6 to be one of the largest product launches in Apple's history -- both in terms of device screen size and total sales. The company reportedly has asked manufacturing partners to produce about 30 percent to 40 percent more iPhones by the end of this year than it ordered for its initial run of last year's iPhone 5S and 5C.

For Apple, having a successful iPhone 6 launch is vital. Apple hosts only one phone event a year, and it generates more than half its revenue from its smartphone line. The iPhone serves as the linchpin to Apple's overall growth, particularly as the market awaits the widely speculated iWatch and as the iPad struggles against lower-cost rivals and larger phones.

Apple's iPhone 6 may be one of the worst-kept secrets -- and most highly anticipated devices -- of the year.

Since introducing the iPhone in 2007, Apple has added a new model every year, with seven generations (covering eight models) so far. For the past three years, Apple CEO Tim Cook has unveiled the new design in the fall, which is why company watchers expect this year's update -- dubbed the iPhone 6 because it follows last year's iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C -- to make its debut in September.

The fact that Apple hosts one big phone event a year, while rivals seem to launch new devices every month, makes each iPhone launch a big deal. That's especially true given that the smartphone is Apple's biggest moneymaker, accounting for more than half of sales and about 70 percent of profit, according to analysts.

Expectations are particularly high for the iPhone 6, which is expected to be a "major" update to the smartphone. Apple has followed a pattern of introducing big new designs every other year, with appealing but modest updates -- like the 5S and 5C -- in between. But Apple investors and boosters are now ready for revolutionary, rather than evolutionary products, and Cook has said he'll deliver compelling new products in the second half of this year.

So what Cook and his team, led by design chief Jony Ive, put into the iPhone 6 matters. The company can't afford to lose defectors to archrival Samsung or have Apple users wait another year before they upgrade. The iPhone's worldwide smartphone market share plummeted from a peak of 23 percent in fourth quarter of 2011 to 12 percent in the second quarter of 2014, according to market researcher IDC. That puts it in second place behind Samsung.

Though the South Korean giant has battled Apple over patents in the courts and is feeling the heat from Chinese vendors including Xiaomi, Huawei, and Lenovo in fast-growing emerging markets, Samsung still ships more than twice as many smartphones as Apple each quarter.

It's far from game over for Apple. In the latest quarter, ended June 28, consumers bought 35.2 million iPhones even though Apple's latest devices -- the 5S, which added a new touch fingerprint security system and faster chip, and the lower-cost, plastic encased 5C -- were nearly nine months old.

The iPhone 6 just may be one of the largest product launches in Apple's 38-year history. Apple reportedly has asked manufacturing partners to produce about 70 million to 80 million units of its larger screen iPhones by December 30, which is about 30 percent to 40 percent more iPhones than it ordered for its initial run of last year's iPhone 5S and 5C.

China Telecom leaks the iPhone 6 on Weibo

Sina News

Call it a big oops moment -- but it seems the next iPhone and its official tagline -- "Even Better" -- has been outed by carrier China Telecom on the Chinese version of Twitter -- Weibo. Sina News reports that the now deleted post included a picture of the new design of the smartphone, as well as confirming it will be called the iPhone 6.

There's been plenty of leaks already, but this leak is as official as you can get. Apple's usual secrecy seems to have sprung plenty of leaks in Asia. Earlier on this month, a Thai official confirmed that it would be called the iPhone 6 and would launch in Thailand, but the name was never officially confirmed.

The leaked picture seems to confirm previous leaks -- including a new design for Apple's iPhone that bears a resemblance to the current iPad Air. While size wasn't revealed in the post, it's likely the upcoming Apple phone will be larger than the 5, at 4.7 inches, with a larger 5.5-inch model a possibility as well.

Supply chain issue snags iPhone 6 production -- report

The iPhone 5S smartphone. CNET

A hiccup in the supply chain has slowed production of Apple's anticipated iPhone 6, leaving suppliers scrabbling to produce enough displays to prepare for the expected launch of the device, Reuters reported Friday.

The news agency, citing supply chain sources, said production of display panels for the new device was interrupted after the backlight used to illuminate the screen had to be changed to ensure the smartphone's screen would be bright enough. The redesign put on hold screen assembly for some of June and July, though production is now back on track and suppliers are moving quickly to get enough screens ready for the smartphone's launch, Reuters said.

It's unclear what the effect of such a supply chain issue could be, especially because Apple has yet to officially announce an unveiling date for the iPhone 6 and -- despite all the news reports surrounding the device -- hasn't confirmed the existence of the next iPhone. Tech website Re/code reported this month that Apple plans to announce the iPhone 6 on September 9. Most news sites and analysts believe that the new iPhone will come out in two sizes, with a 4.7-inch display and a 5.5-inch display -- larger than the latest 5S and 5C phones, which have 4-inch displays.

Apple faces intense pressure to push forward the design of the iPhone, its biggest moneymaker, as customers and investors look for new features to show the company can keep up with its innovative track record. Apple also needs to work hard to differentiate itself against higher-end devices from Samsung and cheaper smartphones from fast-growing Chinese handset makers such as Xiaomi.

Reuters reported that Apple, in trying to create the thinnest phone possible, initially opted to cut back to a single layer of backlight film for the display, instead of the more common two layers. The new specifications weren't bright enough, so Apple went back to add in the extra layer, which then delayed production.

An Apple representative didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

iPhone 5C drops to 97 cents at Walmart

As the release of the alleged Apple iPhone 6 inevitably nears, retailers are dropping the prices of the iPhone 5S and 5C.

A Walmart spokesperson told CNET that starting Thursday at 9 a.m. local times, the retailer is dropping the price of the iPhone 5S to $79 and the iPhone 5C to a mere 97 cents. The iPhone 5S was previously $99 and the 5C was $29.

These new prices apply to all available colors of the smartphones and can only be used with a two-year contract on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, or US Cellular.

Typically, as Apple gears up to release its new iPhone, retailers cut prices of the current phones they have in stock. Weeks before the iPhone 5S and 5C debuted last September, the price of the iPhone 5 plunged at retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, and Target.

The lowered cost of the iPhone 5S and 5C isn't the only indication that the alleged iPhone 6 is forthcoming. The rumor mill has been heating up over the past couple of months with leaked images of both a 4.7-inch and a larger 5.5-inch phone with an enhanced camera and reversible USB cable. Speculation pegs the release date for September.

Apple shares close at all-time high weeks before iPhone 6 launch

Apple shares have jumped ahead of the iPhone 6 launch. CNET

Apple shares on Tuesday closed at their highest ever level as investors looked ahead to next month's iPhone 6 launch.

The Cupertino, Calif., tech company's shares ended at $100.53, up 1.4 percent for the day, and the highest closing level ever when adjusted for June's 7-for-1 stock split. Apple's previous high closing price of $702.10, or $100.30 adjusted for the split, came September 19, 2012 -- two days before the iPhone 5 went on sale.

Apple shares on Tuesday also neared their all-time high in regular trading. The stock hit its previous intraday high of $705.07, or $100.72 when adjusted for the stock split, on Sept. 21, 2012, the first day the iPhone 5 hit stores. Shares rose as high as $100.68 in midday trading Tuesday.

The high comes less than a month before Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 6 on September 9. The smartphone, which contributes to more than half of Apple's total revenue, serves as the lynchpin to its overall growth, particularly as the market awaits the widely speculated iWatch and as the iPad struggles against lower-cost rivals and larger phones. Apple shares have tended to climb ahead of product launches as investors hope to get ahead of big sales numbers.

Apple shares had slid from their high in 2012 on worries that Apple CEO Tim Cook wouldn't be as successful as co-founder Steve Job at developing new blockbuster devices. Cook has promised several times over the past year that Apple would enter "exciting new product categories" in 2014. And in May, Eddy Cue, head of iTunes and the man behind Apple's $3 billion acquisition of headphone and streaming service Beats, upped the pressure by boasting that the consumer electronics giant is working on its "best product pipeline in 25 years."

Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty earlier Tuesday recommended that her clients buy more Apple shares ahead of the iPhone 6 and iWatch product releases.

"Apple shares do not price in upcoming hardware, software, and services innovation," Huberty said. She noted that the new iPhone should gain market share and reaccelerate sales, while the iWatch -- which Apple so far hasn't acknowledged -- is "an underappreciated market opportunity with the potential for up to 60
