Alibaba IPO planned for week of September 8, report says

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba plans to launch its US IPO early in the week of September 8, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing an unnamed source.

If that timing holds, Alibaba shares could begin trading as soon as September 18 or 19, the source told the Journal. And the timing could lead to a big week or so for technology followers. Apple is expected to launch its next iPhone at an event on September 9.

The Alibaba IPO had been delayed until after Labor Day, but this is the first we've heard of a specific time frame. An Alibaba representative declined to comment on the Journal's report.

The IPO is expected to raise up to $20 billion, making it one of the largest ever in the US. Facebook raised $16 billion in its IPO two years ago. Yahoo owns a 22.6 percent stake in Alibaba.

The company, which will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol BABA, is expected to wrap up its dialogue with the Securities Exchange Commission next week, the source told The Journal. The SEC has to approve the IPO listing documents before Alibaba can set a price and launch the IPO deal.

Alibaba is not necessarily a household name stateside, but the IPO could change that. Its famous founder Jack Ma -- who some liken to China's Bill Gates -- has built a massive empire, including payment services, digital media and cloud computing. Alibaba is arguably the largest e-commerce company in the world. It dominates in China, where most of the 302 million people who shop online do so on an Alibaba site. Ma is ready to expand Alibaba's international reach.

According to a June SEC filing, Alibaba has chosen to employ a unique partnership model, which was formalized in 2010 and which will continue once the company goes public. The company argues that the model is more fair than a dual-class stock structure, in which only a handful of insiders control the company with a different class of more influential stock. The company said it will elect new partners each year.

For the fiscal year ended March 31, Alibaba saw its revenue rise by more than 50 percent to $8.45 billion, according to the filing. Its profits nearly tripled to $3.75 billion.

In addition to Ma, its board will be served by SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, who is attempting to merge SoftBank's Sprint business with T-Mobile, and Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang will also be a director.

Apple's iWatch may not ship until 2015, report says

CEO Time Cook, seen here at an Apple store on iPhone launch day last year, has promised "amazing" and "exciting" new product categories this year. James Martin/CNET

You may have to wait a little longer for that Apple iWatch.

The long-awaited wearable won't be "shipping any time soon," Recode reported Friday. The publication, citing unnamed sources, said the device likely will hit the market in early 2015, which means Apple will miss the key holiday selling season.

It also would represent a big gap between the time Apple announces the device -- likely at the iPhone 6 launch Sept. 9 -- and when it starts selling the wearable. But it wouldn't be the first time Apple has unveiled something long before it ships it. The first iPhone was announced in January 2007 but didn't ship until June, and the first iPad was unveiled in January 2010 but didn't hit the market until April.

Apple declined to comment.

Recode set off a flurry in the media earlier this week when it reported Apple would show off a wearable next month during the launch of its newest iPhone. Apple on Thursday sent out invites to an event on Sept. 9 -- widely expected to be the iPhone 6 debut -- though it provided few details, offering only the statement "Wish we could say more."

The event will come a year after Apple introduced the iPhone 5S and 5C and a week after arch rival Samsung is set to unveil its Galaxy Note 4 phone-tablet hybrid, or phablet. Apple has added a new iPhone every year since former CEO Steve Jobs introduced the smartphone line in 2007, and new iPhones have been unveiled in the fall since 2011.

JPMorgan hackers altered, deleted bank records, says report

The scope of yesterday's computer attack against JPMorgan Chase and at least one other bank appears to be much larger than initially reported.

In addition to possibly affecting seven financial organizations, instead of two as originally reported, some bank records at JPMorgan were altered and possibly deleted, reported CNN, citing unnamed sources. The source of the attacks is not yet known.

Getting access to bank records is uncommon but not unheard for hackers, who often change computer logs to cover their tracks but can't always get to more sensitive data, said RedSeal cybersecurity expert Robert Capps.

"Being able to change bank records is an interesting, but not novel, approach to unlawful enrichment," he said. "There have been reports of embezzlement and outright theft by malicious insiders, since computerized banking records have been in existence."

This case, however, involved outsiders who targeted specific employees at JPMorgan Chase to gain access to their computers and the bank databases. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Secret Service, which are investigating the breach, have not said whether customer bank records or identity details were compromised.

Supply chain issue snags iPhone 6 production -- report

The iPhone 5S smartphone. CNET

A hiccup in the supply chain has slowed production of Apple's anticipated iPhone 6, leaving suppliers scrabbling to produce enough displays to prepare for the expected launch of the device, Reuters reported Friday.

The news agency, citing supply chain sources, said production of display panels for the new device was interrupted after the backlight used to illuminate the screen had to be changed to ensure the smartphone's screen would be bright enough. The redesign put on hold screen assembly for some of June and July, though production is now back on track and suppliers are moving quickly to get enough screens ready for the smartphone's launch, Reuters said.

It's unclear what the effect of such a supply chain issue could be, especially because Apple has yet to officially announce an unveiling date for the iPhone 6 and -- despite all the news reports surrounding the device -- hasn't confirmed the existence of the next iPhone. Tech website Re/code reported this month that Apple plans to announce the iPhone 6 on September 9. Most news sites and analysts believe that the new iPhone will come out in two sizes, with a 4.7-inch display and a 5.5-inch display -- larger than the latest 5S and 5C phones, which have 4-inch displays.

Apple faces intense pressure to push forward the design of the iPhone, its biggest moneymaker, as customers and investors look for new features to show the company can keep up with its innovative track record. Apple also needs to work hard to differentiate itself against higher-end devices from Samsung and cheaper smartphones from fast-growing Chinese handset makers such as Xiaomi.

Reuters reported that Apple, in trying to create the thinnest phone possible, initially opted to cut back to a single layer of backlight film for the display, instead of the more common two layers. The new specifications weren't bright enough, so Apple went back to add in the extra layer, which then delayed production.

An Apple representative didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Verizon takes top spot in network quality report, T-Mobile gains ground

RootMetrics issued its 'State of the Mobile Union' for the first half of 2014 Monday. RootMetrics

Verizon topped the charts in network quality, according to the latest report from RootMetrics, a company that independently tests wireless networks.

T-Mobile also jumped in RootMetrics' rankings, beating Sprint for third place nationwide in terms of overall quality.

"Verizon has recaptured the top spot in speed, while AT&T has slipped a little," Bill Moore, CEO for RootMetrics, said in an interview. "Overall the companies are neck and neck. When it comes to reliability, AT&T is getting closer to parity with Verizon."

RootMetrics released the results from its 2014 Midyear US National RootScore Report on Monday. The report provides insights and comparisons of network performance for the entire United States, within each of the 50 states, as well as in the 125 largest metro areas in the country. RootMetrics testers drove more than 234,000 miles, visited more than 6,4000 indoor locations and conducted more than 5.6 million tests across all 50 states, the company said. The tests RootMetrics conducts measure speed, reliability, call, and text messaging quality among other metrics. It ranks the carriers nationally, but also offers insights into performance based on individual states and local communities.
