Google moves Mac Chrome users to 64-bit, sans old plugins

A 64-bit version of Google's Chrome browser has arrived for Mac users -- but it's leaving many plugins behind.

Google released the stable version of 64-bit Chrome for Windows users this week to those who specifically download it, but the company is being more aggressive with Apple's OS X. Although the 64-bit version of Chrome for Mac only just reached beta-testing status, Google plans to make it the default release, according to a blog post Thursday by Chrome team programmer Mark Mentovai.

"Nearly every Mac user has a computer capable of running this 64-bit version, so we're automatically updating all Mac Chrome beta channel users," Mentovai said.

The 64-bit shift modernizes software running on PCs with 64-bit chips released over the last decade, but it doesn't necessarily provide a night-and-day performance increase. The availability of new on-chip memory slots called registers can help 64-bit programs, but the advantages Google highlighted are security, lower memory consumption, and faster launch speed.

"Previously, Chrome was a 32-bit app on Macs," Mentovai said. "While doubling the number of bits won't make things twice as good, it does allow us to make a number of speed and security improvements."

Chrome, though it's become a dominant browser in the six years since its initial public release, still faces major competition from Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Apple's Safari, and Mozilla's Firefox. Google has a lot riding on Chrome: it helps the company drive technology it wants into the Web, it's the foundation for its Chrome OS operating system, and it lets Google keep more search-ad revenue than with searches launched from other browsers' search boxes.

The 64-bit memory advantages come for those who don't have any other 32-bit software running on their Macs; shifting entirely to 64-bit software means that the operating system doesn't have to load 32-bit support software that programs like browsers can draw upon.

The 64-bit Chrome beta arrived more than five years after the initial request for 64-bit Mac support. Apple moved its Safari browser to a 64-bit version almost exactly five years ago, part of a gradual shift of its operating system and its higher-level software such as Final Cut Pro X.

As with the Windows 64-bit transition, Google is leaving behind 32-bit plugins that can extend a browser's abilities. When Google launched Chrome, it adopted the NPAPI standard that Firefox uses for accepting plugins, but it later moved to a new interface of its own making, PPAPI.

Google is phasing out support for all NPAPI plugins later this year, but for now, 64-bit NPAPI plugins will work in the 64-bit Chrome for Mac beta. Examples of 64-bit NPAPI plugins that Google confirmed work with 64-bit Chrome on Windows include Oracle's Java and Microsoft's Silverlight.

"Users shouldn't notice any changes, because most major plugins are available in both 32-bit and 64-bit form, and many major websites have been switching from NPAPI towards more modern HTML5 APIs," referring to the modern-Web programming interfaces, Mentovai said.

The most widely used plugin by far is Adobe Systems' Flash Player, though the company is trying to move beyond it through support of Web standards that duplicate some Flash abilities. Chrome comes with a built-in 64-bit version of Flash Player that uses PPAPI, so that won't stop working with the upcoming plugin change.

Web developers today frown upon plugins in general. They open browsers up to security risks, lead to crashes, and can be hard for people to install and maintain. But there are a lot of plugins -- other examples include Unity's Web Player, LastPass's password manager, Apple's QuickTime, and the Google Earth plugin.

"We've gotten lots of useful feedback from all kinds of webmasters and users, and we've tweaked, updated, and honed recognition and displaying of authorship information," Mueller wrote. "Unfortunately, we've also observed that this information isn't as useful to our users as we'd hoped, and can even distract from those results. With this in mind, we've made the difficult decision to stop showing authorship in search results."

Google spreads its wings, moving into drone deliveries

Google's drone deliveries will for now focus on disaster relief. Google

Google is working on a delivery system called Project Wing that will use what it's calling "self-flying" drones to bring goods to people.

The search giant has been working on the service for two years, and it is the latest project announced by Google X, the division of the company that works on Google's most ambitious projects. Other X initiatives include self-driving cars and the connected headset Google Glass.

Google has been testing the vehicles in Queensland, Australia, and has already made deliveries to locals -- including shipments of candy bars, dog treats, cattle vaccines, water and radios. Similar to the company's self-driving car project, the drones will be able to fly a pre-programmed route at the push of a button. The company said that it will be a few more years before the system is ready for commercial use.

Google is not the only tech giant experimenting with drones. Facebook has been working with drones through an effort called Connectivity Lab, announced in March. In December, Amazon announced it is developing a drone system that will bring products to customers. But while Amazon's efforts seem to be more focused on consumers, Google's early development of the system has been around disaster relief. For example, one early mission for the project in 2012 was delivering defibrillators to heart attack victims.

"Even just a few of these, being able to shuttle nearly continuously could service a very large number of people in an emergency situation," Astro Teller, head of Google X, told the BBC.

How Google Maps led me astray

I should be more grateful. As comedian Louis CK says, everything is amazing.

But three weeks ago, when Google Maps directed me to drive my car up some stairs in Rijeka, Croatia, it was awfully hard to appreciate the miracle of modern technology.

I'm a cartography lover, so no Google project has directly appealed to me more than Google Maps. I eagerly embraced every new ability: plotting routes, finding businesses, scoping out neighborhoods, booking hotel rooms, exploring destinations, figuring out my location during a hike -- and using the Android app to give me turn-by-turn driving directions.

As Google Maps' driving directions improved in the four years I've been using them, I grew to rely on the app more and more for navigation. It made mistakes every now and again, but gone were the days when I'd pay a rental car company a big premium for a beat-up sat-nav device.

Alas, my love affair ended during my August vacation in Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. My Nexus 5 phone and I were lead navigators for a two-car family trip, and I was led astray so often that it became a running joke.

Google buys Gecko Design for X projects

Google is buying product-design firm Gecko to bolster the efforts of Google X, the search giant's experimental division that carries out its most ambitious projects.

Gecko announced the acquisition on its website Friday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Gecko, based in Los Gatos, Calif., has previously helped design products for clients including Fitbit, Hewlett Packard, Dell, and Logitech. Google confirmed the deal, but declined to provide further comment.

"This is an incredible opportunity for everyone at Gecko," wrote Jacques Gagne, design firm's president and owner, on its website. "We are very excited and honored to join Google(x) and work on a variety of cutting edge projects."

Gecko offers several services during the design process, including mechanical design work like assembly layout. The firm, which has been around since 1996, has worked with top industrial design firms like Frog Design and Fuseproject, which was founded by design veteran and Jawbone Chief Creative Officer Yves Behar.

Google's X division is responsible for the company's most out-there projects, which it calls "moon shots." Several of those initiatives have hardware components where Gecko could get involved. The company's head-mounted device, Google Glass, has run into image problems in its current form, now available to the general public. Earlier this month, the company was granted patents that hint a more low-key design, which looks more like ordinary glasses.

The X team has also worked on projects that range from driverless cars to smart contact lenses to high-altitude Wi-Fi balloons that aim to bring connectivity to rural regions.

Bills banning Google Glass while driving are toothless, professor says

A handful of states have sought to bar the use of Google Glass -- the search giant's ambitious connected headset -- while driving, but one professor says the proposed legislation would be ineffective, even if the bills are passed.

Adam Gershowitz, a law professor at the College of William and Mary, wrote in a paper published this week that the laws that try to restrict Glass and other wearables would be "unenforceable" by police. The Wall Street Journal first reported news of the paper.

The reason is that most of the bills only forbid "using" Glass, or specifically, a head-mounted device while driving. Wearing the device is fine, but a police officer would have no way of knowing weather the device was actually in use, or just resting on someone's head. Proposals in Delaware, New Jersey, Wyoming, New York, Missouri and West Virginia all use that kind of language, the Journal said.

In Maryland and Illinois, proposals specifically ban even wearing a headset while driving, but that doesn't account for other wearables like smartwatches, which can also be distracting. All of the current proposed bills have stalled in the legislative process.

Still in its prototype days -- though available to the general public -- Glass has already seen its share of obstacles. The company has slowly rolled out the product since its introduction at Google's developer conference in 2012.

It's been at the center of some controversy, including being banned from some bars in the US and prohibited from movies theaters in the United Kingdom because of privacy and piracy concerns. Last month, Babak Parviz, who once led the Glass team and is credited with being the device's inventor, left Google for Amazon. Last October, a woman in California was ticketed for driving while using glass, though the charge was later thrown out.

Gershowitz said that while more than two dozen states have laws that allow hands-free use of cell phones while driving, the language around those laws create "loopholes" for Glass.

Instead of the wording of current proposals, Gershowitz suggests that bills disallow a person from driving "while wearing a wireless electronic communication device" or "while using a wireless electronic communication device."

Google cracks down on Gmail phishing with spam filters

Google has a new tool to block a possible entryway for spammers to get at users' Gmail accounts. The web giant announced Tuesday that it was adding new spam filtering support to its email platform in an effort to stop scammers from sending misleading or phishing messages.

The filters deal with similar looking letters from the Unicode Consortium that could let spammers fool people. Most companies, apps, and websites use Unicode standard icons, so that characters work across platforms. However, some characters look nearly identical, such as the Latin and Cyrillic lowercase "a."

"Scammers can exploit the fact that ဝ, ૦, and ο look nearly identical to the letter o, and by mixing and matching them, they can hoodwink unsuspecting victims," Mark Risher from Google's Spam and Abuse team wrote in a blog post. "Can you imagine the risk of clicking 'ShဝppingSite' vs. 'ShoppingSite' or 'MyBank' vs. 'MyBɑnk?'"

The Unicode Consortium lists these types of character combinations as "highly restricted." Google said its new filters will knock out any of these combinations included in emails sent to Gmail users. The company also said it believes the Consortium's highly restricted designation "strikes a healthy balance" between legitimate use of domains and those likely to be abused.
