Facebook apologizes for manipulating news feeds in psychology experiment

In June, Facebook researchers announced the results of a 2011 study that manipulated the news feeds of nearly a million user news feeds to see how positive or negative posts affected user behavior. The experiment only encompassed a tiny fraction of Facebook's more than 1.3 billion users, but saw incredible backlash from users who hadn't been asked if they wanted to partake in the study. Today, Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer finally apologized in a blog post, and outlined plans for more structured research in the future.

"It is clear now that there are things we should have done differently," writes Schroepfer. "For example, we should have considered other non-experimental ways to do this research. The research would also have benefited from more extensive review by a wider and more senior group of people." Schroepfer then listed a few ways Facebook will undertake research going forward:

Guidelines: Future studies will go through an "enhanced review process" before research can begin.Review: A panel of individuals at Facebook will include senior researchers, along with engineers, lawyers, and the company's privacy and policy teams.Training: Facebook has added research education to its six-week training bootcamp for new engineers.Research website: Facebook's academic research is now available in one location, here.

Facebook can't take back what it did, but today's measures go a long way towards rectifying the underlying structures that enabled such an aggressive study to happen without Facebook's higher-ups having any idea it was taking place. It should also help new engineers understand that Facebook users aren't just numbers on a chart. 1.3 billion users is a whole lot of people, but that doesn't mean you can experiment on them — even a tiny percentage of them — without being more transparent about exactly what you're doing.

    Facebook nixes click-bait headlines in users' newsfeeds

    Facebook, which used this as a prime example of a click-bait headline, says the changes to News Feed will "help people find the posts and links from publishers that are most interesting and relevant." Facebook

    What if this article was titled "29 reasons we're thankful for Facebook's News Feed change," or "Facebook switches its News Feed algorithm. You won't believe what happens next," how about "Here's one unbelievable reason Facebook changed its News Feed policy?" Do you think readers would be quicker to click on it? Most likely, yes -- but according to Facebook, that's not really a good thing.

    The social network announced Monday that it's cutting down on so-called click-bait stories appearing high in people's newsfeeds. Facebook said the reason for the change is because it wants users to see more relevant information and make sure posts from friends aren't drowned out.

    The new changes to News Feed "help people find the posts and links from publishers that are most interesting and relevant, and to continue to weed out stories that people frequently tell us are spammy and that they don't want to see," Facebook research scientist Khalid El-Arini and product specialist Joyce Tang wrote in a blog post.

    The way Facebook is going about de-prioritizing click-bait articles is two-fold. One, the social network will look at how long people spend reading an article. If users click on the article and then quickly click back to Facebook, that's an indication the article may be click-bait because it didn't fully interest the reader. Two, the company will take into account how many people are liking and commenting on a story vs. the number of clicks it's getting.

    Facebook reports enormous uptick in use of snoop-proof email

    Keeping email safe from prying eyes is a joint effort, with both the sender and receiver needing to implement encryption technology. And Facebook -- which sends its user base billions of notification emails every day -- says things have gotten significantly more secure because of changes made by popular webmail providers such as Microsoft and Yahoo.

    The percentage of emails sent from Facebook that are received by webmail providers which support encryption has jumped from less than 30 percent in May to 95 percent by mid-July, according to a Facebook blog post published Tuesday.

    The change comes amid a growing effort by webmail providers to better support encrypted email. That's a reaction to National Security Agency snooping revealed by whistle-blower Edward Snowden, and it's a necessity at Facebook, where notification emails about posts and comments made by users' friends often contain snippets of private or semi-private content from the site.

    The kind of basic webmail encryption Facebook refers to in its blog post is provided by a technology called STARTTLS, which uses Transport Layer Security encryption to make it harder to spy on email. The challenge with keeping email secure is that it requires both the sender and the receiver to support the same encryption technology -- otherwise messages remain unprotected. Though Facebook has supported STARTTLS for several years, of the three biggest webmail providers, only Google's Gmail had adopted it.

    Facebook testing 'satire' tag for parody news in the feed

    The top story on parody news site The Onion on Monday was titled "Area Facebook User Incredibly Stupid." It was a spoof story about a Facebooker that appears "frequently frustrated" but is really just "incredibly stupid."

    While any reader on The Onion site would know this story was a joke, apparently some Facebook users are confused by real news and satire when such stories appear on their News Feeds. It's become so much of a problem that Facebook revealed Monday it's testing a "satire" tag for articles from parody news sites.
