Robo Brain is learning from the internet

As of July, the internet contained some 3.32 billion indexed pages. It's a pretty massive place and, while much of it is taken up with pictures of kittens and other less elucidating material, you can also hit up the net any time you want to learn a new skill; swing dancing, for instance, or how to open a champagne bottle with a sword.

And, as it turns out, it may also be a good way to teach a robot tasks and recognition. Last month, Cornell University turned on its Robo Brain project, described as "a large-scale computational system that learns from publicly available internet resources, computer simulations, and real-life robot trials".

Even as you read these words, the robot is in the process of downloading one billion images, 120,000 YouTube videos and 100 million how-to documents and appliance manuals, as well as previous training Cornell researchers gave to other robots in their laboratories. By studying these materials, the Robo Brain will learn how to recognise objects and how they are used, as well as human language and behaviour -- and it will be able to pass this knowledge on to other robots.

"Our laptops and cell phones have access to all the information we want," explained computer science assistant professor Ashutosh Saxena. "If a robot encounters a situation it hasn't seen before it can query Robo Brain in the cloud."

If a robot sees a mug, for instance, it can learn from Robo Brain to recognise the coffee mug, that it is used to hold liquids, that it can be carried by the handle and that it needs to be held upright when full, so as to avoid spillage, but can be tipped when it is empty, such as when it is being carried to and from the dishwasher.

It can also contain layers of abstraction, a system the researchers call "structured deep learning". For example, if the robot sees an armchair, it knows that it is classed as furniture, and more specifically, that it is furniture used for sitting -- a sub-class that contains a wide range of chairs, stools, benches and couches.

This information will then be stored in what mathematicians call a Markov model, represented as a series of points ("nodes") connected by lines ("edges"), like a giant branching graph, where each state depends on the previous states.

The nodes could be actions, objects, or parts of an image, and each one is assigned a probability, or a level of variance while remaining correct. A key, for example, can vary in form, but still usually consists of a handle, a shaft and teeth. The robot can then follow a chain and look for nodes that match within probability limits.

Internet cat Lil BUB helps you enjoy summer

Nothing says summer fun like watching a cat purr while ocean waves crash in the background.

Fans celebrated the winter holidays while watching her hour-long purr-fest, "Lil BUB's Magical Yule Log" video. Now fans can watch the famous cat happily wheeze while she soaks up the sun at the beach in "Lil BUB's Magical Summerime Yule Log" video.

Lil BUB isn't your ordinary cat sensation. Her odd appearance sets her apart from the likes of her fellow feline superstars like Grumpy Cat, Colonel Meow, Oskar the Blind Cat, Nala Cat, and Hamilton the Hipster Cat.

"Her lower jaw is significantly shorter than her upper jaw, and her teeth never grew in which is why her tongue is always hanging around," according to her website.

But these genetic anomalies that give Lil BUB an extreme case of dwarfism that gives her a "perma-kitten" appearance, is what makes her even more adorable. Being the runt of the litter made her an Internet YouTube star thanks to her legions of fans on Reddit, Tumblr, Facebook, Google, Instagram, and Twitter.

Google partners with other firms to boost Internet speeds in Asia

To rev up Internet speeds, Google is heading under water again.

The search giant announced on Monday that it is one of six companies investing in a $300 million undersea cable that aims to boost the speed of Web connectivity in Asia.

The cable, nicknamed "Faster," will connect major West Coast cities -- including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Portland -- to Chikura and Shima, two coastal cities in Japan. The connection will run 60 terabits per second, which is about 10 million times faster than the standard cable modem.

The other companies teaming up on the cable are Asian wireless and telecommunications companies: China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, Global Transit, KDDI, and SingTel. The project's main supplier will be the IT services and products company NEC. Construction of the cable will begin immediately, and is slated to be ready for use by the second quarter of 2016.

"'Faster' will make the Internet, well, faster and more reliable for our users in Asia," wrote Urs Hölzle, Google's senior vice president for technical infrastructure.

This isn't the first time Google has invested in underwater cables. The company backed another cable routed to Japan in 2008 with "Unity" and another in 2011 that connects Japan and Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines and Thailand.

For Google, the push to improve connectivity is aligned with its business strategy around its core services.

"At Google we want our products to be fast and reliable," wrote Hölzle. "That requires a great network infrastructure, whether it's for the more than a billion Android users or developers building products on Google Cloud Platform."

The company has made similar efforts with its ambitious "moon shot" projects. An initiative called Google Fiber also aims to speed up Internet connectivity and is for now available in limited markets, including Austin, Texas, and Provo, Utah.

Google has also invested in attempts to expand Internet access -- not only speed them up. The mission of a project called Loon is to connect rural areas to the Web by beaming down Wi-Fi via high-altitude giant balloons. The company has also offered free Wi-Fi to areas around its offices in New York City and Mountain View, California. Google is even one of several companies vying to turn New York City's pay phone booths into free Wi-Fi hubs.

Crimeans are now using the Russian internet

Russia may have claimed Crimea as its own, but it takes much more than annexation to truly integrate the peninsula into the mainland. One of those steps has just been completed, as a large portion of Crimean internet traffic is now being routed through Russia for the first time. According to research from internet analysis company Renesys, internet signals started flowing through a newly-constructed submarine cable connecting Crimea to Russia on July 24th.

Apple reportedly paying internet providers to ensure speedy delivery of its data

Apple has apparently turned on its new content-delivery network, and is reportedly paying Comcast and other big ISPs to move hardware into their data center and build direct interconnects to their networks. This is the exact same evolution that Netflix has been going through, building out its own CDN and agreeing to pay ISPs for interconnection. The major difference is that Netflix has loudly opposed the fact that ISPs can charge a fee for this arrangement, while Apple has stayed mum on the issue.
