Apple's OS X Yosemite was clearly designed with high-resolution Retina displays in mind. Everywhere you look, Apple's upcoming operating system is cleaner, brighter, sharper, and just nicer to look at. But right now, only Apple's laptops would be able to showcase that software to its full potential. Thankfully it sounds like that's about to change. 9to5Mac reports that a new iMac with Retina display is in "late" testing in Cupertino, and Apple may be nearly ready to show its latest desktop to the world. The iMac would reportedly feature an incredibly sharp "5K" display, though its exact resolution isn't clear. As 9to5Mac points out, OS X Yosemite contains references to screens with resolutions of 6400 x 3600, 5760 x 3240, and 4096 x 2304, so one of those could be the winner.
Pixel density aside, the new iMac is rumored to feature an overall design that's similar to the current model. Apple's Retina display made its way to the MacBook Pro in 2012 after debuting on iPhone and iPad, but has yet to move beyond portables. Many expect OS X Yosemite to launch sometime in October; its release will likely coincide with a media event where the company may also reveal new iPads and iPods. Pricing for the new, high-res iMac is anyone's guess; it'll obviously cost more, and if history is anything to go by, expect the non-Retina models to remain available for the foreseeable future. And there's no reason they shouldn't; even without fancier screens, the current iMacs still represent a fantastic all-in-one package.
