If the rumors are true, Apple may unveil a wearable device along with its new iPhone at an event on Sept. 9.

But will that wearable be the long-rumored "iWatch," a wrist-based smartwatch built off Apple's iOS mobile operating system that aims to take on challengers from Google, LG, Motorola and Samsung? If it isn't the iWatch, just what will Apple CEO Tim Cook and his team introduce in the wearables market?

Recode reported Wednesday that Apple's first wearable might make debut with the iPhone 6 -- rather than at a product event expected in October. But Recode carefully avoided calling the wearable the iWatch and didn't make any mention of a smartwatch. That suggests Apple's wearable plans may still be too cryptic to decipher.

So will it be a smartwatch or a fitness band, especially given the favorable and widely circulated mock-ups from designers like Todd Hamilton? Or will it be a device unlike any we've never seen before. Whatever it is, Apple, which hasn't introduced a product in a new category since the iPad tablet in 2010, needs to impress.

"Apple has kind of lost its mojo," says James McQuivey, an analyst with Forrester Research. "But, Apple is a unique company, it's capable of making that kind of radical social change, not only possible, but desirable. And that's how it will get its mojo back."

But figuring out how to get people, now accustomed to carrying around a smartphone, to buy into a new mobile device can be a challenge. Samsung, which has led the charge by releasing more than half a dozen wearables in the last two years, has tried everything from round and square watches, to color LCD-equipped wristbands, to a headset that drapes around your neck. Other device makers like LG and Motorola have stuck to wrist-worn time pieces, for now.

Even Apple co-founder Steve "Woz" Wozniak said this week that wearables may be "a hard sell," though he thinks if anyone can convince consumers to covet a wearable, it's Apple. "Apple works very hard to produce exceptionally great products and doesn't quickly release things like a wearable," Woz told CNET News. "So if one is introduced I expect it to have a chance to set the direction and make the product category finally viable."

Apple doesn't comment on rumors or speculation and hasn't ever acknowledged it's working on wearable development -- though CEO Tim Cook has been promising "amazing" new products since last year and said at a May 2013 conference that the wearables market is "ripe for exploration." Drones could rule the skies over Disney

Drones could help Disney create massive floating light shows. Disney/US Patent and Trademark Office

What could be more magical than Disney fireworks, light shows and multifarious water fountains? These things plus high-tech entertainment with drones.

Walt Disney Co. has filed three patent applications that could let it provide complex aerial entertainment shows with the support of drones. The applications involve floating projection screens, marionettes supported by drones, and a synchronized aerial light display with "floating pixels."

"In the entertainment industry, there are many applications where it is desirable to provide an aerial display," Disney wrote in the patent applications. "For example, an amusement park may have a lagoon or other open space over which it is desired to present a display to entertain visitors. In another example, massively large aerial displays may be presented at sport stadiums or other venues to celebrate holidays such as New Year's Day."

Disney wrote that without the use of drones, aerial shows are challenging. Additionally, there's a limit to how fantastic the company can get with simple fireworks, light shows, and water fountains.

If Disney could create a massive marionette and use drones to pull its strings as it ambles through the sky -- that would certainly wow onlookers. Or, what about a sky-born display screen where people could watch Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh and Cinderella dance around?

When drones enter the picture, it appears the creative options are endless.

JPMorgan bank could be hackers' latest victim

While hackers have been targeting retail stores over the past few months, it appears they haven't given up on banks.

The FBI is investigating a data breach into JPMorgan and possibly several other banks, according to The Wall Street Journal. JPMorgan is the largest bank in the US and the sixth largest in the world, according to Forbes.

While information on the timing and reach of the hack is scant, sources familiar with the probe told the Journal that the investigation began earlier this month. It's believed the breach may have been caused by hackers injecting malware into a JPMorgan employee's personal computer. It's possible that between two and five US banks have been affected.

Banks have long been a target for cybercriminals, who are after customer financials and data. JPMorgan spokeswoman Trish Wexler told CNET that the financial services company battles hackers constantly.

"Companies of our size unfortunately experience cyber attacks nearly every day," Wexler said. "We have multiple, layers of defense to counteract any threats and constantly monitor fraud levels."

This breach is just one of many to rock the cyber world over the past few months. Retail giant Target said in December that hackers obtained credit card data for more than 110 million customers who shopped in its stores late last year. And, over the past few months, arts and crafts retail chain Michaels Stores, department store Neiman Marcus, and restaurant chain P.F. Chang's revealed they were victims of security breaches aimed at stealing customer's credit card information.

Several US banks were hit with online attacks earlier this year, including Wells Fargo, J.P. Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, and HSBC. Government officials believe these attacks originated from Iran. Rather than looking to steal customer data, these were distributed denial-of-service attacks that temporarily shut down the banks' websites.

This is what your home on Mars could look like

Winning design Queen B (Bioshielding) 2 Bedroom 2 Bath Mars Apartment. Noah Hornberger/Thinigverse

Humans living on Mars is a fascinating concept. We already have Mars One looking to establish a Mars colony, and NASA planning manned missions to the Red Planet, with one objective being to assess the feasibility of living there; whether Mars has the resources necessary for human survival, and whether we have the technology to create what we need.

While, however, it's still a distant dream, that hasn't stopped people from thinking about how we might live if we get there. Recently, NASA and Makerbot held the Mars Base challenge: to design human habitation, using materials either found on Mars or brought from Earth, that could be 3D printed.

With 228 submissions on Thingiverse, the competition was fierce -- but the three top designs are in, with the first place winner receiving a MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D printer and spools of MakerBot PLA filament going to second and third.
